7 Reasons to LOVE Rain On Your Wedding Day!

I'm here to share with you seven reasons to be really happy about rain on your wedding day and offer up some fun and beautiful wedding inspiration for those of you nervously checking the Farmers Almanac a year before your wedding date.

While you have no way of knowing ahead of time what the weather is going to be on your wedding date, you can take some of the pressure off by asking your wedding photographer if they have a backup plan for you. You can set aside another location or two that you'll be happy with in the event that it's pouring out. Chances are if you're booking an experienced local photographer, they've become very familiar with all the best spots that provide cover, and they will have had rainy-day backup plans come into play at other couples' weddings.

After a decade as a wedding planner and photographer, I can tell you that your energy and vibe are important and can have a real impact on your day. The chemistry between a couple and their photographer while intangible, is really important to your artist being in their best creative element. If you're able to stay in your happy love zone, your photographer is going to feed off that positive energy, and you're going to have a really magical wedding experience. A negative bride and groom can zap their wedding photographer's confidence and creativity.

Couples that can take their wedding day in stride, no matter what comes along, are already demonstrating that they have what it takes to navigate married life. Those that problem-solve together and work as a team are more likely to report happy unions, versus those that don't. Focus on each other and the incredible gratitude you feel for having found each other, chances are it will set the tone for your family and friends to keep things fun and positive on your big day. Joyful laughter, smiles, and hugs should be your wedding day mantra!

Ok, But Why is Rain a Good Thing?

1. Have you heard of atmospheric photography? It's a term I learned from some of our UK elopement couples, and it basically means wedding pictures on very foggy or misty days. You can take some stunning and once-in-a-lifetime images on days like this. The feeling of the two of you enveloped in the mists is next-level romantic, and let's not forget the uninterrupted smooching under that big umbrella!

2. Umbrellas and Boots!!! This is your opportunity to stock up on some seriously cute accessories. For large groups of guests, I'd suggest going with all-clear umbrellas so you can still see everyone, or if you have a very distinct color theme running through your event that offers a pop of color, like bright pink, that could be very photo-worthy. I always keep my extra large red umbrella in the trunk of my car for unexpected sprinkles and the results have been breathtaking. As far as footwear goes, Etsy is full of custom options like monogrammed rainboots in a rainbow of colors that you can put your NEW initials on, tall pink or "something blue" Wellies, and let's not forget how rock n roll cowboy boots or patent leather Doc Martins could be!

3. It's the universal sign of fertility. Sit with that one for a minute. Fertility can mean so many things, from starting a family to adopting fur kids together. But I feel that it also means fertile ground to plant your brand new marriage in and watch it grow. Once you're married, there are so many changes and opportunities for growth. You may be changing your last name, moving to a new location, and blending your finances. No matter which of these you do, they all fall under the "growth" category. Water is life and a well-nourished marriage is a very good sign indeed!

4. Your flowers won't wilt! Couples can spend thousands of dollars on flowers for their wedding day, and a nice misty day will keep your bouquet in top shape for the whole day. I've seen plenty of bridal bouquets wilt on hot sunny days, but not yours! And speaking of flowers, rainy days are very low on pollen count for those of you with allergies.

5. There's a Hindu saying that rain is lucky on your wedding day because a wet knot is harder to untie. If you don't believe me, try it at home:)

6. Your wedding photographer is going to be able to dive deeper into their creativity and after the initial moment of "oh no, it's raining!" passes, they're going to wow you with everything in their creative toolbox. They've learned so many tricks and secret weapons to combat everything that could possibly arise on an event date. They're going to go above and beyond to prove to you, that they've got everything under control and are going to show you how What can you expect? Some fantastic reflection shots! Rainy sidewalks, wet sand on beaches, and still pools of water can provide some outstanding images of your reflection. If you're near the ocean, chances are that you'll get some HUGE waves crashing in the background of your session, and let's not forget puddle jumping while holding hands, and dancing in the rain! There is a "Dirty Boots and Messy Hair" hashtag on the 'gram for a reason; those pictures can be unique, fun, and sexy AF.

7. Rainbows. There's a very real chance that the stars might align and you'll be blessed with one of these mesmerizing signs of hope and good fortune. A double rainbow means you are on the path to success, which is very good news for your brand-new marital status. But the biggest news of all is that you scored one of the most elusive and awe-inspiring wedding backdrops in the world, free of charge. What a phenomenal wedding gift from the Universe!
